Definition and Core Requirements of AWWA C213 Standard
AWWA C213 is a technical standard developed by the American Water Conservancy Association specifically for fusion bonded epoxy coatings on the inner and outer walls of steel water supply pipelines. It is mainly applicable to water supply pipelines, fittings, and welded joints installed underground or underwater. This standard requires the coating material to be hot-melt epoxy powder, which is sprayed by electrostatic spraying or fluidized bed process, and solidified to form a dense anti-corrosion layer. The small applicable pipe diameter is 24 inches (600 millimeters), but for coatings with smaller pipe diameters, electrical testing is required to meet the standards. The coating thickness requires both the inner and outer layers to be 12-16 mils (305-406 microns), and physical performance tests such as impact force, shear viscosity, and water absorption must be conducted.
Material processing and testing requirements
The epoxy powder material of AWWA C213 anti-corrosion steel pipe should contain curing agent, filler, pigment and other components, and the shelf life can be sealed and stored below 27 ℃ for up to 12 months. The production process requires shot blasting treatment on the surface of the steel pipe to form an anchor shaped contour of 1.5-4 mil (38-102 microns) to enhance adhesion. The laboratory testing items include coating thickness uniformity, impact resistance (≥ 100 lbf · in), bending performance, wear resistance (5000 revolutions per minute wear ≤ 0.3g), and water absorption rate (1-3 levels qualified). On site inspection uses an electric spark leak detector to verify the integrity of the coating.
Application Fields and Engineering Advantages
This type of steel pipe is widely used in urban water supply networks, petrochemical transportation, marine engineering, and thermal pipelines. Its advantages include: 1) strong chemical corrosion resistance, which can resist acid, alkali, salt water, and microbial erosion; 2) Long usage time significantly reduces maintenance costs; 3) Excellent environmental performance, in line with drinking water safety standards; 4) High mechanical strength, capable of withstanding high pressure and complex geological conditions. For example, in a centralized heating system, its combination with polyurethane insulation layer can meet both anti-corrosion and thermal insulation requirements.
Comparison with other anti-corrosion standards
Compared to 3PE anti-corrosion (three-layer polyethylene), the pure epoxy coating of AWWA C213 performs better in high temperature resistance (up to 140 ℃) and adhesion (shear viscosity ≥ 3000psi), but its resistance to mechanical damage is slightly inferior to that of polyethylene layer. Compared with IPN8710 anti-corrosion coating, fusion bonded epoxy coating does not require on-site painting and has more stable factory prefabricated quality. In the field of drinking water, its environmental friendliness is superior to epoxy coal tar coating, which may release harmful substances.
