The core content of AWWA C205 standard
The AWWA C205 standard mainly specifies the material, application, and curing requirements for cement mortar protective lining and coating of steel water pipes and fittings, suitable for workshop application scenarios with a diameter of 4 inches (100mm) and larger. This standard provides a detailed description of the internal lining coating method, requiring the use of centrifugal rotation or equivalent processes to uniformly compact the lining inside the pipeline. The surface of the pipe fittings needs to be treated by mechanical or pneumatic means, and other equivalent methods are allowed for the external coating. In addition, the standard also specifies the specifications for on-site connections and references related standards such as ANSI/AWWA C602 to ensure overall construction quality.
Material and Construction Technology Requirements
The ratio of cement mortar should meet the weight ratio of cement to sand of 1:1 to 1:2, and the slump should be controlled at 60-80 millimeters (which can be appropriately relaxed when the pipe diameter is less than 1000 millimeters). The lining thickness is set within a tolerance range based on the pipe diameter, for example, when the pipe diameter is ≥ 24 inches, the thickness is 0.75 inches ± 0.06 inches. During the construction process, accelerated curing or natural repair should be carried out, and the surface should be smooth and free of sand particles. The standard emphasizes the quality requirements for welded steel pipes, which should be designed and inspected in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C200 and AWWA manual M11.
Quality inspection and defect handling
The quality of the lining needs to be evaluated through indicators such as thickness testing, surface flatness (300mm straightedge gap ≤ 1.8mm), and roughness (mechanical spraying is inspected according to the sample, manual application is judged by hand feel). Cracks are allowed to exist, but their length must not exceed the circumference of the pipeline, and the area of hollowing at a single point should not exceed 200 square centimeters. Defects that fail the inspection need to be repaired with the same material and retested. The standard also requires the lining curing time to be ≥ 7 days (slag cement extended to 10.5 days), and the final compressive strength to be ≥ 30MPa.
Collaborative application with other standards
AWWA C205 forms a technical system with multiple associated standards, such as on-site painting following ANSI/AWWA C602, welded steel pipe manufacturing following ANSI/AWWA C200, and design based on AWWA manual M11. This standard is also compatible with mechanical coating, pneumatic coating and other processes, and is often combined with E anti-corrosion, IPN8710 anti-corrosion and other technologies in practical engineering to improve the durability and corrosion resistance of pipelines.
Practical application and market supply
Cement mortar lined anti-corrosion steel pipes based on this standard are widely used in fields such as water supply and heating. Domestic production enterprises can achieve a lining thickness of 0.5-2.5 millimeters through mechanical spraying or manual coating processes, and with external anti-corrosion technologies such as epoxy resin and polyurethane, the pipeline time can be significantly extended to more than 30 years. The market supply covers various types such as spiral steel pipes and seamless steel pipes, and supports customized production to meet different engineering needs.
